Burning Through The Budget

NEVADA - Northern Nevada just made it through one of its most intense summers in years. The Bug Fire. The Hawk Fire. Floriston. Thousands of evacuations, destroyed homes, and firefighters working massive shifts as one fire rolled into the next. While the flames burned, local fire departments also faced something less dramatic but just as important: budget cuts, vacant positions, and staffing shortages.

This week, Battle Born Bytes looks at what happens when fire departments are asked to protect more land from increasingly dangerous wildfires while struggling to keep enough people and resources on hand to do it.

The episode also dives into Nevada’s property tax system, where an outdated depreciation rule can mean less revenue for local governments and fire districts. Lawmakers tried to change that with AJR1 in 2025, but the measure didn’t make it across the finish line.

The full episode is available on YouTube.

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director with Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Wildfires do not care about budget cycles, vacant positions, or whether Nevada has finally figured out its revenue system. When a fire starts, people need to be there. What happens when we keep asking firefighters to do more with fewer resources? Nevada needs to take the long-term funding of fire protection seriously before the next emergency arrives.”
