The Bill Would Seek to Cap Insulin Costs at $35 for Nevadans on Private Health Insurance
CARSON CITY – Today, the full Assembly unanimously passed Assembly Bill 555 (AB555). Sponsored by Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager, this measure would seek to cap out-of-pocket costs for insulin at no more than $35 for a one-month supply. It follows efforts through the Inflation Reduction Act that capped insulin costs at $35 for Medicare beneficiaries in 2022. The bill will now head to the Senate for approval, before awaiting Gov. Joe Lombardo’s signature.
Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“As AB555 works through the legislative process, it’s imperative that state leaders act on making insulin affordable for the tens of thousands of Nevadans who need it. But already, Gov. Joe Lombardo has vetoed bipartisan, common-sense legislation with flimsy rationale and little accountability. The Nevadans who need insulin, who are relying on the relief that AB555 will bring them, deserve to know that the governor won’t use his pen to take that relief away at the 11th hour. In 2023, Lombardo let that pen hang over the Legislature like a sword of Damocles before vetoing a record number of bills. In 2025, Nevadans must know whether or not the governor will stand with them and sign this crucial legislation.”
Kaylyn Kardavani, Executive Director of New Day Nevada, issued the following statement:
“The passage of AB555 in the Assembly is an opportunity for Governor Joe Lombardo to sign into law an act that would benefit Nevadans. Governor Lombardo has vetoed popular initiatives in the past and is primed to continue his record-setting veto pace this session, as he signaled earlier this week by signing his first veto. Governor Lombardo can step in and fill the void that the federal government has created and really show Nevada that good, common-sense legislation that helps his constituents is not a partisan issue. AB555 represents a chance to address a critical gap, support working families and invest in public health. The people of Nevada are watching and want a governor that listens, acts and delivers on the issues they care about the most.”
