Assembly Floor Passes Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui’s Gun Safety Measure, Assembly Bill 245

Updated: Sep 11, 2025

The bill now moves to the Senate Judiciary Committee for a work session

NEVADA - Today, the Assembly Floor passed Assembly Bill 245 (AB245), sponsored by Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui, in a 27 to 15 vote. AB245 prohibits anyone younger than 21 years old from purchasing or possessing semiautomatic shotguns and semiautomatic assault weapons. The bill will now move over to the Nevada Senate.

Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui issued the following statement:

“As a lawmaker and a survivor of gun violence, I know firsthand the importance of common-sense measures to keep our communities safe. The passage of AB245 is a crucial step toward ensuring that deadly weapons stay out of the hands of those who have been responsible for countless mass shootings. Nevada has spoken — we are choosing responsible gun ownership and safety for our families.”

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Addressing youth suicides and mass shootings is also a critical part of keeping our communities safe. AB245 does this by raising the age of purchase and possession for certain firearms. Put simply, this bill aims to reduce gun violence, and we applaud Majority Leader Jauregui for her work on this critical issue. We now look to the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass these key policies.”

Kris Brown, President, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence

“Gun violence in all forms has deeply affected Nevada communities, taking the lives of over 600 people in the state every year. But the passage of these life-saving gun violence prevention bills through the Nevada State House marks a critical step forward in changing this devastating reality. By placing age restrictions on semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, Nevada is passing common-sense legislation that will build a better, safer future for generations to come. This is a reminder that enough is enough. It is time we take bold action to end gun violence in Nevada. Brady thanks Assemblymember Jauregui for her leadership on this issue.”
