Assembly Judiciary Committee Passes Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui’s Assembly Bill 105 and Assembly Bill 245, Key Gun Safety Measures

Updated: Sep 11, 2025

Both Bills Seek to Address Gun Violence by Raising the Purchase & Possession Age for Specific Firearms and Prohibiting Firearms at Election Sites

NEVADA - This week, Assembly Bill 105 (AB105) and Assembly Bill 245 (AB245), both sponsored by Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui, passed in the Assembly Judiciary Committee ahead of the first major deadline of the 83rd Nevada Legislative Session. AB105 prohibits firearms at election sites to prevent voter and election worker intimidation and threats. AB245 prohibits anyone younger than 21 years old from purchasing or possessing semiautomatic shotguns and semiautomatic assault weapons. Both bills were heard in a Joint Assembly & Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on March 27th, 2025.

Assembly Democratic Majority Leader Sandra Jauregui issued the following statement:

“As a survivor of the 1 October shooting, I carry the weight of that tragic day with me every moment. The committee's passage of AB105 and AB245 is not just legislative progress—it's a heartfelt commitment to safeguarding our communities from the devastating impact of gun violence. AB105 protects every Nevadan right to cast their vote without fear or intimidation of gun violence. AB245 raises the age for purchasing semi-automatic rifles to 21, matching the age to purchase handguns and preventing firearms from falling into the hands of those who have historically been more likely to commit mass shootings. These measures are more than just policies—they are vital to preventing future tragedies, honoring those we've lost and protecting our collective safety. I urge my colleagues in the Assembly to support these life-saving bills.”

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Voting in this country will only ever be free if voters can vote free from intimidation – and for that reason, AB105 is a necessary piece of legislation, now more than ever. Taken together with AB245, which could help prevent mass shootings and youth suicides, these measures will meaningfully make Nevada a safer place to live. We thank Majority Leader Jauregui for her leadership on this issue, and look forward to a full vote on the Assembly floor.”

Emily Persaud-Zamora, Executive Director of Silver State Voices, issued the following statement:

“We are pleased to see AB105 pass out of committee in its first house. AB105 would ensure that guns are not permitted at polling locations in Nevada, ensuring that all voters feel safe when exercising their constitutional right to vote. Once again, we would like to thank Assemblymember Jauregui for carrying such an important bill that addresses the intersection of voting rights and gun violence prevention. With less than 60 days left in the 2025 legislative session, we urge the Legislature to support AB105.”

Agustin Cabrera, State Legislative Manager with Giffords, issued the following statement:

"Today, Assemblywoman Jauregui and Nevada lawmakers took another step forward in the fight to save lives with committee passage of key gun safety bills. Raising the age to own a firearm and keeping guns out of polling places are common-sense measures that help protect communities. Nevadans know firsthand the heartbreak and loss gun violence leaves behind, so it's encouraging to see state lawmakers take action to break the cycle."
