Battle Born Progress Marks Ninth Anniversary of October 1 Shooting

NEVADA - On the ninth anniversary of the October 1 shooting, Battle Born Progress joins Nevadans in remembering the 60 people killed and hundreds more injured at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas Strip, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

On October 1, 2017, thousands of concertgoers were gathered to enjoy a night of music when a gunman opened fire from a Mandalay Bay hotel room. Nine years later, the loss continues to be felt by families, survivors, first responders, health care workers, and the entire Las Vegas community.

Since 2017, Nevada has enacted several gun violence prevention measures, including a ban on bump stocks, a red flag law, and expanding background checks. Battle Born Progress will continue to advocate for policies that protect Nevada families and communities.

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Nine years later, we still carry the grief of the night. We also carry the responsibility to honor those we lost with action as well as remembrance. Nevada has taken meaningful steps to make our communities safer, including passing extreme risk protection orders into law. Most recently, we have worked diligently to pass bans on firearms at election sites, age limits on certain kinds of firearms, and improvements to our hate crimes statutes. Yet, Governor Lombardo has vetoed all of these efforts despite his tenure as Sheriff and his time with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He knows the toll gun violence takes on communities, but he refuses to act to protect our communities. Lombardo has failed to lead on this issue, leaving survivors in a lurch. Nevadans need a governor willing to prioritize their safety and well-being over donors or political parties. As always, we stand with survivors and families, and we will keep fighting for a state where no community has to endure this kind of tragedy again.”
