Bipartisan Senate Vote Advances IVF Bill (SB217) to Assembly

CARSON CITY, NV - With bipartisan support, the Nevada Senate has advanced Senate Bill #217 (SB217), sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro. This measure protects in vitro fertilization (IVF) and seeks to expand and equalize access to fertility treatments. The bill would mandate that most Nevada health insurers and Medicaid plans cover infertility diagnosis and treatment on the same terms as other benefits. SB217 would protect IVF and has the potential to make successful pregnancies a reality for families who might otherwise be unable to have a baby.

“Thank you to Senators Nicole Cannizzaro, Rochelle Nguyen, Melanie Scheible, Julie Pazina, Marilyn Dondero Loop for fighting to advance SB217. These senators and their bipartisan supporters have stepped in to fulfill a broken promise from the Trump administration. SB217 is an example of what can happen when lawmakers come together across the aisle to secure the most fundamental of hopes – that every Nevadan who dreams of starting a family has a fighting chance. By enshrining infertility diagnosis, IVF cycles, and fertility preservation on equal footing with other health benefits, this bill doesn’t just expand coverage, it codifies the promise that no one will face arbitrary barriers or unequal cost-sharing when pursuing parenthood. We hope the Assembly will pass this bill without hesitation, and that Governor Lombardo will opt to do the right thing and sign this bill into law.”

ABOUT SB217: This bill makes revisions relating to reproductive health care and makes it a covered medical condition under Medicaid and other Nevada health insurers. The measure passed the Senate on a bipartisan vote of 15-5, with one abstaining vote.
