Progressive Groups Respond to Passage of Partisan Continuing Resolution

Updated: Sep 11, 2025

NEVADA — Today, the United States Senate passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government until September 2025. This short-term funding bill keeps discretionary spending in place but does not include essential programs like Social Security and Medicare. This partisan CR is an effort by Republicans to diminish long-standing programs and boost defense with little congressional restraint. Progressive groups provided statements below on the CR.

Laura Martin, Executive Director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, issued the following statement:

“The passage of the CR is a betrayal of the working class families in this country that made it what it is. Trump, Congressional Republicans, and complicit Democrats have passed a massive giveaway to the ultrawealthy and cut essential programs that the country’s most vulnerable rely on. The Billionaires and corporations who paid for Trump’s campaign are tearing our country apart as was outlined in Project 2025. They plan to feed their greed and raise costs for everyone. They are coming for all working people–no matter who you voted for. That is why their budgets and tax plans include huge giveaways for the wealthy, while gutting popular programs that help us get by and thrive like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing, and food assistance to hungry kids. These decisions aren’t just dollars and numbers, they are the lives of our friends, families, and neighbors.”

Shelbie Swartz, Battle Born Progress Executive Director, issued the following statement:

“Today the congressional majority that ran on fiscal responsibility and promised to usher in a new Golden Age passed a deeply partisan Continuing Resolution (CR) that slashes funding by $13 billion from non-defense programs—affecting services like education, healthcare, and infrastructure—while boosting defense spending by $6 billion. They refused to pass a ‘clean CR’ and instead they have granted Donald Trump unfettered access to taxpayer money. The GOP has decided that pleasing Donald Trump is more important than effective governance, which will continue to harm both the economy and the American people as a whole.

Mary Wolfrom, Lead Economic Justice Organizer with Make the Road Action Nevada, issued the following statement:

"Today, the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) but does so at the expense of working families while protecting the wealthy. This bill keeps tax breaks for the rich intact while failing to safeguard essential programs like Social Security and Medicare—lifelines for thousands of Nevadans.

By cutting housing and nutrition assistance, this CR puts seniors, veterans, and low-income families at risk, making it harder to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Nevadans deserve a budget that prioritizes our communities, not one that forces working people to struggle while the rich get richer. The GOP has decided to play politics and comply with Donald Trump’s agenda, instead of doing their job and vote for the wellbeing of their constituents."

Mathilda Guerrero Miller, Government Relations Director of Native Voters Alliance Nevada, issued the following statement:

“Congressional Republicans have passed a budget that tells us exactly who they care about—and it’s not working families. By gutting education, healthcare, and infrastructure while throwing billions more at defense contractors, they are forcing everyday Americans to pay the price for their reckless agenda. This CR is a giveaway to the wealthy and a slap in the face to the people who make this country run. Americans deserve a budget that prioritizes them—not one that sacrifices their well-being to fuel corporate greed and political ambition.”
