NEVADA - As Nevada continues to grow and more communities expand into fire-prone areas, the cost of wildfire is becoming harder for families to avoid. Even for those who never lose their homes. Wildfire smoke can threaten public health, insurance coverage is becoming harder and more expensive to obtain, and the loss of housing can put additional pressure on communities already struggling with affordable housing.

This week, Battle Born Bytes examines the real cost of wildfire in Nevada, including the health impacts of smoke, the growing challenges for homeowners to get insurance, the economic consequences of losing housing, and the billions of dollars that can be at stake when catastrophic wildfires threaten communities.

The episode also examines NV Energy's proposal for a $500 million wildfire self-insurance fund, raising questions about how the financial risk of wildfires should be divided among utilities, insurers, taxpayers, and ratepayers.
