The measure would have prohibited firearms at election sites
NEVADA - Yesterday, Gov. Joe Lombardo vetoed Assembly Bill 105 (AB105) sponsored by Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui. AB105 would have prohibited firearms at election sites because of consistent issues and threats to election workers and voters in past election cycles.
Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui issued the following statement:
“I’m deeply disappointed by Governor Lombardo’s decision to veto AB 105, a bill grounded in a simple but powerful principle: every Nevadan should be able to vote—and help carry out our elections—free from fear, threats, or intimidation. AB 105 would have strengthened protections for both voters and election workers at a time when threats to our democratic process are becoming more frequent and more dangerous. This commonsense legislation reflects our shared belief that democracy works best when people feel safe and empowered to participate. While the Governor’s veto is a setback, I remain committed to advancing policies that protect our elections and uphold the fundamental values that sustain our democracy.”
Amber Falgout, Communications Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“The simple fact is that Gov. Joe Lombardo’s veto of AB105 will leave Nevada elections less safe than voters deserve. Unfortunately, we live in an age when political violence and voter intimidation are a more pressing concern than it has been in decades. Other states have taken the simple but important step of prohibiting firearms at election sites. It is a disappointment that Gov. Lombardo wouldn’t commit to doing the same.”
Emily Persaud-Zamora, Executive Director of Silver State Voices, issued the following statement:
“Silver State Voices is disappointed that Governor Lombardo has vetoed AB105. In our years of experience with conducting an election protection program, voters have repeatedly expressed that feeling safe at the polls is a crucial factor when casting their ballot. While this is unfortunate, this will not deter us from fighting for gun violence prevention and voting rights for Nevada voters.”
Kris Brown, Brady President, issued the following statement:
“Free, fair, and safe elections are a cornerstone of our democracy. In vetoing a bill that bans guns from polling places, Gov. Lombardo puts Nevada communities and Nevada’s elections in danger. The presence of a firearm alone at voting booths can intimidate voters, especially in a country where so many people have experienced the devastating consequences of gun violence. Everyone deserves to safely cast their vote, and this veto will make it harder for Nevadans to exercise that right.”
