The bill now heads to Governor Lombardo’s desk to be signed or vetoed
NEVADA - Today, the Senate Floor passed Assembly Bill 245 (AB245), sponsored by Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui, by a vote of 12-8. AB245 prohibits anyone younger than 21 years old from purchasing or possessing semiautomatic shotguns and semiautomatic assault weapons. This bill heads to Governor Lombardo’s desk, where he can sign or veto.
Assembly Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui issued the following statement:
“Raising the minimum age to purchase assault weapons is a straightforward, commonsense step to protect our communities and save lives. Time and again, we’ve seen the tragic consequences when individuals obtain assault-style weapons as soon as they turn 18. AB245 moves us closer to preventing these senseless acts of violence, and I thank my Senate colleagues for passing this measure today.”
Amber Falgout, Communications Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“Working to prevent youth suicides, homicides and mass shootings – as AB245 does – or protect our polls, polling workers and voters – as AB105 does – are necessary measures if Nevada is ever going to meaningfully reduce the threat of gun violence. Tragedies in other states have proven that these questions are not hypothetical, and we shouldn’t wait for another tragedy to strike before we have the courage to act in our own state. We thank Assemblymember Jauregui for her leadership and the senators who voted in favor of these bills, which together mark a critical step toward ensuring a safer Nevada for each and every Nevadan.”
Kris Brown, Brady President, issued the following statement:
“Raising the minimum age to purchase or possess semiautomatic assault weapons is an important step towards ending the gun violence epidemic in Nevada. We have seen too often that mass shootings are increasingly carried out by young people with assault weapons. In fact, six of the nine deadliest mass shootings from 2018 to 2022 in our country were carried out by individuals under 21. We applaud Assembly Floor Leader Jauregui for introducing this common-sense, life-saving bill.”
Agustin Cabrera, State Legislative Manager for Giffords:
"We applaud the Nevada Senate for passing this important, life-saving bill. We've all seen time and again that putting guns in the hands of young people can lead to tragedy. The data shows that kids and teens are more at risk of suicide and more likely to commit homicide, and laws like this one go a long way to keep young people and communities safe. For legislators looking to save the lives of Nevadans, this law is commonsense.”
