Senate Votes to Cut Billions in Healthcare and Food Assistance to Give Massive Tax Breaks to Wealthy Individuals

NEVADA - Today, the U.S. Senate passed the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ that will drastically affect Americans. Despite concerns from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office about the bill adding substantially to the deficit and stripping millions of Americans of healthcare and food assistance, the measure passed 51 to 50 with Vice President Vance voting to break a tie. Nevada Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen voted no, recognizing the impact these disastrous cuts will have on Nevadans.

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Today’s Senate vote is a shameful betrayal of working families in Nevada and across the nation. Instead of investing in our communities, Senate Republicans have gifted massive tax giveaways to billionaires at the expense of essential healthcare and nutrition programs that millions rely on every day. Medicaid and SNAP are lifelines, not poker chips.Governor Joe Lombardo may not have cast a vote today, but let’s be clear: his full-throated endorsement of Donald Trump and this cruel MAGA agenda makes him complicit. He’s siding with a vision for America that lets the ultra-rich cash in while Nevada families get kicked off their health care and see grocery bills rise.We applaud both Senator Cortez Masto and Senator Rosen for voting ‘no’ because they understand that we cannot sustain a system that prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of working people. We will not forget this vote, or who sold Nevadans out to the highest bidder.”

Leo Murrieta, Executive Director with Make the Road Action Nevada, shared the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: this bill is an attack on working-class, immigrant, and Latine families—plain and simple. Republicans in the Senate just voted to rip away healthcare from millions by gutting Medicaid, slash food assistance through SNAP, and cut programs that keep our kids healthy and our elders safe—all while adding billions to the deficit. They call it fiscal responsibility—we call it what it is: cruelty in plain sight. These aren’t just line items on a spreadsheet. Medicaid saves lives. SNAP keeps families fed. And for our communities, these programs are often the difference between surviving and falling through the cracks. The Republicans who pushed this bill didn’t just abandon their constituents—they deliberately chose to harm them. Make the Road Action Nevada stands with all Nevadans—and we’ll keep fighting to hold these politicians accountable.”

Andrew Clarke, Revenue Coalition Manager of New Day Nevada, issued the following statement:

“For Nevada families already struggling to make ends meet as prices skyrocket and essential services disappear, this bill is nothing short of a disaster. The so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” is an empty slogan masking a cruel agenda. It slashes Medicaid and SNAP—programs that keep families healthy and fed—and guts funding for infrastructure that keeps our communities connected and safe. All while handing out massive tax breaks to billionaires and adding trillions to the national deficit without focusing on progressive revenue to reinvest into our communities. Every Nevadan and American deserves a dignified life- shame on Congress and this administration for passing this bill.”

Laura Martin, Executive Director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, issued the following statement:

“Making America Great’ means prioritizing tax cuts for the ultra wealthy and family separation, while crucial social safety net programs are cut. The current budget bill will take away health care and food assistance from millions of Americans, who are working class families, seniors on a fixed income, or folks with disabilities. In addition, this budget rolls back tax credits/grants that were directly supporting our educators and students by ensuring our schools are climate resilient and equipped with solar energy that would save our school district millions of dollars. Those dollars could have been better spent hiring more teachers, school counselors, and teaching materials. The cuts that Trump and Republicans are dying to make will not benefit our community but instead fund tax breaks and loopholes that benefit only billionaires and the same corporations that price gouge our communities. Our government must work for all of us, not just the wealthy. Taxpayers should not be funding a billionaire's third yacht when our families are unsupported, constantly being priced out of our homes, and struggling to meet other basic needs like healthcare, utilities, and food.”

Sue Burtch, Executive Director of Nevada NOW, issued the following statement:

“It’s a big bill, but definitely not a beautiful one. This will make America great for billionaires but not for hard-working, everyday people. Shame on you, GOP! Shame on you, Congress!”

Lauren Babb, Vice President of Public Affairs Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, issued the following statement:

"This reconciliation bill includes devastating cuts to Medicaid health coverage that will further impoverish tens of millions of Americans with low incomes and cut many off entirely from health-care insurance coverage. This is a shocking betrayal of the most vulnerable people in the nation, including millions of families with children, while this same bill also provides tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Every year, millions of patients rely on Planned Parenthood health centers to get the high-quality, compassionate care they need.  For many patients, PPMM’s health centers are their only source of care. We will never stop fighting back against efforts to restrict access to life saving sexual and reproductive health care, no matter what."

William Moore, Civic Engagement Director of Mi Familia Vota Nevada, issued the following statement:

“The big, ugly bill is an affront to all Nevadans, but is especially bad for Latino families who are struggling to survive this toxic MAGA economy. While rent is up, food is up, and our utility bills are up, MAGA republicans also think it’s a good idea to take away our health care to give tax cuts to billionaires. Make it make sense for Nevadan families who can’t lose more services they paid for with their tax dollars. Worst of all, for our Latino and immigrant families, there is a ton of money here for Trump to wantonly racially profile American citizens and detain and deport immigrants. Mi Familia Vota will organize and fight the passage of this bill in Nevada and on Capitol Hill.”
