Supreme Court Strikes Down Harmful Tariff Policy as Unconstitutional

NEVADA - Today, the United States Supreme Court ruled to strike down President Trump’s most sweeping tariffs. This comes as the United States has seen rising prices, a slowing economy, and job losses, with much of the economic fallout either directly or indirectly linked to the White House’s chaotic attempt to implement those tariffs. That includes an ongoing nationwide tourism slump that has hammered the Las Vegas economy.

Today’s ruling is a win for Nevadans and Americans overall as they struggle to pay higher prices for many goods and services impacted by Trump’s tariffs. From grocery stores to vehicles, the tariffs have increased costs in Nevada households by $900. However, the Trump Administration has already signaled it will continue to pursue outrageous new tariffs through other legal means.

Paula Luna, Interim Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:

“Thankfully, the Supreme Court affirmed what countless legal experts had long argued: Trump’s tariffs were unconstitutional. This decision offers Nevadans long-overdue relief from the sweeping price increases that have strained nearly every aspect of daily life. Yet Governor Lombardo, unwilling to break from Trump, refused to acknowledge the real harm this reckless economic policy inflicted on his own constituents. Nevadans deserve leadership focused on lowering the cost of living, raising wages, and expanding opportunities for working families—not leaders who suggest people need to “feel a little pain,” even as workers and the middle class shoulder a disproportionate burden. At a moment when our economy faces serious challenges, the absence of leadership from both Trump and Lombardo is nothing short of staggering.”

Laura Martin, Executive Director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, issued the following statement:

“While Nevadans are struggling with rising costs of groceries, housing, and utilities, Trump’s attempts to further consolidate executive power are struck down by the Supreme Court. Trump’s tariffs have cost Nevadans upwards of a $1000 dollars this past year. That’s a thousand dollars less a family has to cover necessary expenses like food, rent, and healthcare needs all while dealing with the loss of SNAP benefits and ACA benefits.

This decision is a break for Nevadans and win against Trump and his allies like Governor Lombardo, who have continued to circumvent our democracy and the checks and balances meant to protect the people.

Barbara Hartzell, Executive Director of Native Voters Alliance NV, issued the following statement:

“This ruling finally says what families have known all along. Trump’s tariffs were never about helping working people. They were about politics, power, and posturing, and families were the ones used to absorb the damage. In Nevada, that looked like higher grocery bills, slower tourism, fewer hours at work, and hundreds of dollars a year gone just to survive. Striking them down does not give people back what they lost, but it ends the lie that this pain was necessary and says clearly that families are not disposable.”
