Trump’s ‘Affordability’ Promises Fall Flat Amid Layoffs, Inflation, and a Rapidly Diminishing Social Safety Net

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — After voters rejected Republicans in red and blue states alike in yesterday’s elections, President Donald Trump sought to lie, deflect and rely on tired campaign tropes that have become painfully stale nearly a year into his second presidency. His claims come as inflation remains stubbornly high, layoffs have surged and tariffs have made this country’s affordability crisis worse, not better.
Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“No one can seriously believe the fiction that Donald Trump’s White House has made this country more affordable. It has been Trump’s tariffs that have kept inflation up, smothered American manufacturing, and cratered tourism – especially to Las Vegas. As the government shutdown stretched into the longest-ever, Trump threw a Great Gatsby party while cutting off SNAP benefits to more than 42 million Americans. While Trump has enriched himself, his friends, and corporate cronies, enablers like Gov. Joe Lombardo have done nothing to fight this administration’s worst impulses. The message yesterday’s elections sent is clear: Trump and his corporate stooges have no idea how to run this country, and no amount of lying about the state of the economy will change that.”
Andrew Clarke, Revenue Coalition Manager on behalf of New Day Nevada, issued the following statement:
“A year ago today, Donald Trump railed against the affordability crisis and rode that discontent straight into the White House. Since then, he’s handed $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy, while working families shoulder higher costs from tariffs and trade wars. Governor Joe Lombardo has followed suit in Nevada, vetoing universal school lunches while negotiating a $1.6 billion tax handout of his own to wealthy Hollywood billionaires.
Meanwhile, across the nation, Democrats have fought to freeze skyrocketing utility rates, bolster public transportation, and voters in Colorado just passed legislation that will raise progressive revenue to fund universal school lunch. We can invest in our most vulnerable while making sure the wealthy pay their fair share or we can double down on giveaways to billion-dollar corporations. Nevada deserves an economy built from the bottom up — not another retread of failed trickle-down economics.”
André Wade, Silver State Equality, issued the following statement:
“On Nov. 4, voters across the country decisively rejected the lies on everything from inflation and the economy to voter integrity and the handling of the immigration issue. Millions of people said no to the power grabs, hateful politics and corruption peddled by Trump, the Trump Administration, and his most strident supporters, sending a clear message that our votes will not be silenced, our voices will not be ignored, and our rights will not be rolled back without a fight. In record voter turnout, Californians passed Proposition 50. And, despite facing millions in anti-trans attack ads, pro-LBGTQ+ candidates won the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey; voters in New York made Zohran Mamdani, who ran an unapologetically pro-trans campaign, their next mayor; and pro-equality justices retained their seats and their majority in key Pennsylvania judicial races. Let their victories be a reminder that We the People have the power.”
Tiffany Hsieh, Western States Director for Climate Power, issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump created this affordability crisis. He handed billions to Big Oil, gutted clean energy jobs, and drove up utility bills for working families. Here in Nevada, we’ve seen what happens when politicians side with polluters: Energy costs skyrocket while local jobs disappear. Families are paying the price for Trump’s reckless war on affordable, reliable clean energy, and it’s time we call it what it is: a crisis of his own making.”
Leo Murrieta, Director of Make the Road Action Nevada, issued the following statement:
“The President and his Republican cronies in Congress just can’t help themselves. They peddle lie after lie and try to play games right in our faces. MAGA is playing with the lives of hard-working people who are just trying to get by in this rugged economy. Children are going hungry, seniors are rationing their medications, and families are being asked to do more than ever with so much less. Latine voters are coming to their senses when it comes to the lies and garbage this President and his Republican cronies are trying to push off on all of us. Last night’s sweeping electoral wins against Trump’s Republicans would not have been possible without Latine voters, so MAGA had better wise up and get to doing their jobs to reopen the Government, or else Latine voters will make sure many of them are on the unemployment line come next November.”
Laura Martin, Executive Director of PLAN Action, issued the following statement:
“The Election results last night were less of a blue wave and more like an orange crush. Americans from every corner of the country rejected the high cost of living, crony capitalism, and the politics of personal attacks we’ve come to know under the Trump regime. Americans expect their politicians to make their lives better, and voters showed up in force to prove that. We’re headed into a special session with the same energy, and to stop the corporate capture of our state.”
